US FDA Limits Certain Phthalates in Food Packaging Materials

The United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) has reopened the comment period to gather additional feedback on the available use and safety information for nine remaining phthalates (eight plasticizers and one monomer) currently authorized for use as plasticizers in food packaging and food contact applications. To date, 23 phthalates and two other plasticizers have been revoked for use in materials that come into contact with food.1 There have been concerns of anti-androgenic effects from phthalate exposure, especially for children and infants. With phthalate restrictions and bans taking effect, manufacturers have turned to related alternative plasticizers, such as terephthalate esters, cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic acid esters, and trimellitic acid esters.

CIL offers an extensive line of stable isotope-labeled and native phthalate, primary and secondary metabolite, and related plasticizer standards to assist researchers with their testing needs.
